Year 4 Roman Day
Wow - how brilliant does this look? Year 4 had a fantastic (but a bit wet!) Roman Day with the centurion Julius Marcellinus. He is an acting centurion in II Legion Augusta, the Legion which served with the invasion force of Claudius in 43AD. The children got to meet the Centurion, handle and try on equipment and learn all about the history of the Roman invasion. More excitingly afterwards, they signed up and became legionaries for the morning. They got to experience camp jobs, play Roman legionary games, finishing the morning with some ‘delicious’ Roman hardtack and making a 2000-year-old lentil stew recipe.
In the afternoon, the children became history detectives and handled a range of authentic Roman artefacts trying to work out their real purpose. The end of the day saw the children being put through their paces with some authentic legionary training! They practised marching in time, formations and how to handle a Roman shield - all done with Latin commands!
Another brilliant enrichment day to celebrate their Romans topic.
