Year 5 Viking Day
Year 5 once again welcomed the amazing 'History Off The Page' and Lord Ulf to deliver a fantastic, immersive Viking Day in our new hall! The children and staff dressed up as Vikings and they looked brilliant - Shelby even sewed her own dress. The day started with the children entering a Danish village and hearing about the Anglo-Saxons advancing an attack towards their village! Throughout the morning, the children were freely able to explore 10 different Viking activities in the village. Some of these were making rune stones, a Viking good luck charm necklace, weaving their own bracelets and making Viking clay pots. The children loved all these activities and were thrilled to have so much to take home to show their families.
In the afternoon, the children were trained to use Viking shields! They became archeologists and had to "dig" for artefacts and use them to work out what part of the Viking village they had dug up. Unfortunately, one group dug up a grave! They then displayed their artefacts like a museum and got to visit and explore each other's finds.
Finally, Lord Ulf chose one child's clay pot to turn into a brooch. He melted pewter infront of the children and poured it into Grace's clay pot. The children learnt it took less than 1 minute to solidify and it took the shape of the design inside Grace's pot. Lucky Grace got to take home a beautiful pewter brooch on a necklace!
This was a fantastic day, leaving the children delighted with their makes and fully immersed in the Vikings topic. A huge thank you also to our parent/grandparent volunteers as without them, we couldn't have run all the activities.
